Metter High School was built in 1910 and accredited in 1912. Candler County began compulsory attendance in 1918. By 1915 there were 15 white and 11 black schools in Candler County. There are now four , Metter High School (9-12), Metter Middle School (6-8), Metter Intermediate School (4-5) , and Metter Elementary School (K-3). Metter High School and Lillian Street School were consolidated in 1967 . The total consolidation was completed in 1970 , with the name Metter High School being the main stay and black and orange were chosen as the school colors. The Lillian Street tiger mascot would become the Metter High School Tiger. The Tiger was chose as the school mascot because it is a powerful , aggressive , smart , and cunning animal. The students of the school readily identify with the mascot and compete in a strong , smart , and aggressive manner in their daily quest to attain academic and athletic excellence . In January 2005, the "Tiger Battalion" was formed at Metter High School as a National Defense Corps of Cadets (NDCC) unit . The dedication and hard work of the first class of the "Tiger Battalion" quickly led to recognition and approval as an Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) until in May 2005 . The first "Tiger Battalion" class decided to adopt theh school crest as their unit crest to symbolize their dedication to being their very best in scholastics , athletics , and the fine arts. The scroll on the crest symbolizes the pursuit of academic excellence , the Olympic torch with Olympic rings symbolizes the pursuit of athletic excellence , and the artist pad with musical tuning instrument symbolizes the pursuit of excellence in the fine arts. The strong linked chain running between these three areas signifies the link between the three in becoming a well rounded citizen. The Crest is topped by a lamp of knowledge symbolizing the overall pursuit of excellence in all three areas. The Tiger stand beside the crest and watches over it encouraging all students to lead the way in attaining excellence in their scholastic, athletic , and fine arts endeavors.
